Abstract:
This study explores the conceptual and empirical underpinnings of the Heartwork Village initiative, a values-based, community-driven development model spearheaded by Rotary International District 3820. Grounded in Rotary’s ethos of “Service Above Self” and inspired by the cooperative principles of the Kibbutz system, Heartwork Village aims to develop sustainable, ethical, and empowered communities aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A systematic literature review, guided by the PRISMA 2020 framework, was conducted to synthesise insights from 50 scholarly and institutional sources, informing the development of a replicable model. The review highlights the transformative potential of value-anchored interventions, emphasising the importance of embedding principles such as compassion, equity, and integrity into community development practices. Key findings underscore the need for inclusive governance mechanisms, with participatory planning and community empowerment central to project success and sustainability. The study also examines the critical role of cross-sector collaboration and the alignment of local initiatives with global frameworks, such as the SDGs. The paper concludes by articulating a conceptual framework for Heartwork Village. This framework is designed to catalyze a process of endogenous transformation, in which service evolves from an external activity to an internalized way of life, and community members are empowered to become active co-creators of their own sustainable futures.
