Effect of Ginger and Garlic Extracts on In-vitro Thrombolysis

Abstract:

Atherothrombotic diseases, caused by the formation of thrombus in blood vessels, are considered to be a leading cause of death. Commonly used thrombolytic agents, such as streptokinase (SK), have certain limitations that may result in serious consequences. Since ancient times, herbal preparations such as Zingiber officinale and Allium sativum have been used to treat various diseases. This research aims to investigate the thrombolytic effect of Z. officinale and A. sativum extracts, as well as their synergistic activity compared to streptokinase. An in vitro thrombolytic procedure was conducted to assess the thrombolytic effect of an 80% methanolic extract from plants in blood samples obtained from healthy human volunteers. Streptokinase was used as a positive control, and water was used as a negative control. The findings revealed that ginger and garlic extracts exhibited 55.37% and 46.87% thrombolytic activity, respectively. Additionally, they demonstrated 66.34% and 72.51% synergistic activity with streptokinase on thrombolysis, respectively. On the other hand, streptokinase alone exhibited 86.25% thrombolytic activity. Conclusion: The observations indicate that Z. officinale and A.sativum would be a promising sources for a clot lysis drug. However, the in vivo clot lysis properties have not yet been discovered.
